In singing there are some elements that make your singing complete.
1.The first is Pitch.
Most singers confuse pitch for loudness
Pitch is really different from loudness
Pitch is the perception of the frequency of the sound experienced, and is perceived as how "low" or "high" a sound is, and may be further described as definite pitch or
indefinite pitch.
As a singer your pitch is really important
Before you try pitching make sure you're on a comfortable key. Like i always say not everyone is destined to hit high notes and that's why God created Bassists.
2. VOCAL WEIGHT
Vocal weight refers to the perceived 'lightness' or 'heaviness' of a singing voice. This quality of
the voice is one of the major determining factors in voice classification within classical
singing, and constitutes a sub categorization of vocal types (or parts).
Additionally, vocal weight, which is often determined by the thickness of the vocal folds, may refer to a voice's ability to handle changes in vocal dynamic, and may affect its overall
vocal agility, as different voices handle changes in dynamic differently. In other words, vocal
weight can affect overall vocal agility and flexibility. For example, heavier voices often
have more difficulty maneuvering through florid coloratura passages than lighter voices do.
Heavier voices can also sound awkward singing staccato sections because they don't tend to
have as much flexibility as lighter voices do.
Lighter voices tend to have greater agility and flexibility, but have less facility in filling legato
lines, and cannot be heard as well over an orchestra as heavier voices can. Know that this factors help you in knowing what part you'll fall into.
3. DICTION
This is one common fault among many singers
Pronouncing Lord as Lor
As a Singer you must make sure you're pronouncing your words well Clear enough for everyone to hear you.
4. TESSITURA
The term tessitura, which comes from the Italian word for 'texture', generally describes
the most musically acceptable and comfortable timbre for a given voice type. Tessitura refers to the range of pitches in which a singer is most comfortable singing, as well as the section of a singer's range where the voice has the most pleasant-sound or tonal quality and easy volume. While a soprano and a mezzo-
soprano may have a similar range (as defined by the spectrum of notes that they are both
capable of singing), their tessituras will lie in different parts of that range, which is why they
are each classified as a different voice type.
6. SILENCE
Surprised? Maybe not Silence is regarded as an important element in singing
It's not just adding embellishment all the time. There are times when you need to just keep your calm to let the verse you just sang sink into the heart of your audience so they don't get carried away with the melody only!!
7. MIND WORK:
Singing/ministering ain't just the work of your lips but your mind. You must be connected. But remember proper preparations prevents poor performance!! Without proper training if you're in the middle of a song and you try hitting high notes I'm glad to tell you it will only happen in your mind😀
8. VOICE STRENGTH Knowing your voice strength also helps you determine your voice type.
Sopranos and tenors have a stronger head voice than mezzos and basses. Likewise,
mezzos and basses have a stronger, meatier middle voice than sopranos and tenors.
Also focus on your range before jumping to notes outside your range else you'll crash beautifully.
Okay before we end tonight's lecture i'm sure someone will be like but how do i know the part i sing so let me expanciate what my oga said last night when you see terms like C4 -C6 it refers to the fourth to sixth octave of C on your piano
A3 - A5 refer to the the third octave of A to the fifth octave of A on the piano
* Sopranos : Sopranos sing from C4 to A5, or higher.
* Mezzo-soprano : The mezzo-soprano range extends from about A3 to F5.
* Alto : The standard range for altos is approximately E3 to E5.
* Contralto : The lowest female voices are called "contralto," and extend below E3.
* Countertenors : Males with very high vocal ranges, into the alto and soprano ranges of female vocals, or who have a strong, clear falsetto, are called "countertenors."
* Tenor : This is near the upper end of the male's vocal range. A tenor can comfortably sing between C3 and A4.
* Baritone : A baritone singer ranges between F2 and E4.
* Bass : The range for a bass singer is around F2 to E4, with a comfort range normally between G2 and A3.
* Contrabass : If you can sing G1 or lower, you are what's known as a sub-bass, contrabass, or a basso profundo.
NB: those terms are to know your vocal range not for singing in parts
When you're to part a song you have
Soprano
Alto
Tenor
Bass
The fact that you sang soprano when you were little does not mean you'll sing soprano now
People grow so flow with the changes and bring out the best outta your ministrations.
