It’s no news that all over Nigeria, there is a Heat Wave. A Heat wave is simply an extended period of extreme hot weather (heat).
Scientists have actually predicted a heat wave for most part of Africans and this is due to the rising temperatures. Unfortunately Policy makers in African countries rather pay more attention to drought and flooding, but extreme heat also poses a significant health risk.
Make no mistake about it: Heat Wave is dangerous and it can harm vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and outdoor workers (e.g. construction), but heat is often a ‘silent killer’.
In African generally, we tend to believe heat is normal and people can cope with it. Well this might be true to some extent. Heat wave is not just ‘heat’ but a longer period of heat which is dangerous to humans, animals, even the environment.
Some part of South Africa are facing water drought as a result of the rising temperature.
Despite this heat wave (which will pass away, hopefully soon), there are some precautions you ought to take:
- Keep yourself Hydrated: Drink water as often as you can (Whether you are thirsty or not)
- Let your clothings be something light weight and loose fittings .
- Do not leave children alone unsupervised especially when outside.
- If possible, stay indoors and avoid the sun shinning on you as much as possible.
- If you start to feel unwell, find a cooler place to stay. If you still feel unwell, go to the nearest clinic immediately.
- Rest frequently especially if you are working outdoors.
- Remember to look out for your neighbors, friends, family and loved ones especially the elderly and children.
- If you can, do have a cool bath during the afternoon.
Heat wave is dangerous and do causes sunburn, heat stroke, exhaustion, cramps etc.
Prevention is better than cure. Keep yourself safe during this heat wave. Be safe.
