If you are a Nigerian, if you live in Nigeria, if you know about Nigeria, then read this:
Just like Ighalo squandered that scoring opportunity and then swiftly turn to ask for aid (penalty), so are we as a nation. We waste resources, and then turn to blame colonial masters, trade partners, the world etc.
If that penalty was given and we moved to second round, it would have been a cosmetic success, which will not last. That same scoring opportunity Ighalo missed was the same Ante Rebic, that Croation striker utilized to secure their first goal, a game they eventually won. Same way developed nations, baring their difficulties harnessed their limited resources to position their countries on a prosperous path. Resources everywhere is limited, you must harness it effectively and efficiently to make good out of them.
And please, do not give me that crap that Argentina was better or that we played a stronger team, Argentina was never different from the Icelandic team we met even with their stars. We had all it takes to win, and that they failed to win, they should be reprimanded strongly. We cannot keep accepting failures in a global competition at the stage and feel cool about it.
As a nation, we are too quick to accept failure, and then say - "they tried". I think it is important we all realize that resources are expended when we send representatives to international competition - it is not a joke or play. Resources, hard-earned are spent. We did not send to them World cup to go and try, we did not send them with all the allowances, the monies spent to go and mark register, we sent them to come back with the trophy - It is a competition for heaven's sake.
When will we deal with this mentality that celebrates mediocrity? that mentality that gives up easily, in the belief that good things are not meant for us. that mindset that gets us to move on from failure too quickly, without initiating a probe, or shutting down a system to investigate why we fail.
We can win the World Cup, Africa Can, but not with a mentality that pats a failing child on the back, not with a mindset that says "afterall, they are better than you". How come we think so less and little of ourselves. I am very pissed right now!!!
So sad that we are moving on from this again, forgetting that hard-earned tax payers monies were spent to take those boys to Russia.
So sad!!!
