Purpose Test
The second principle that we can apply to our music to determine its suitability is the Purpose Test.
All music was written with a purpose in mind. Here we ask, "For what purpose was this song written?" or "What is this trying to promote or encourage?" Determine whether the music is sad, joyful, uplifting or soothing. Music that may be appropriate at one time may not be appropriate at another.
Some music may even be intended to promote sinful choices or ways of thinking. When we apply the purpose test to our music, we choose songs whose purpose lines up with our own as Christians and the values of our local church. Songs are not listened to purposelessly.
You become purposeful about the music you listened to when you have a standard I.e values. Nowadays youth basically listen to music and without not thinking about what value is the music promoting. Your music style matters because it says a lot about you and the values you uphold.
Liking a song that promotes drug abuse simply means you don’t see drug abuse as a serious problem. Those lyrics that promote violence, rape, harassment, have you ever thought about it when you listen to it.
As a believer, what we listen to affect our inner mind, we are consciously or unconsciously feeding our minds through the music we listen to. You have no business listening to songs that doesn’t impact you positively or pass a positive message.
It’s not all music you should listen to, don’t listen to songs that are not consistent with your values as a believer.
Tomorrow, we move onto the third principle that we can apply to our music to determine its suitability.
