 Association Test
No music exists in a vacuum. An otherwise good song may be rejected because of its associations. The key question for this test is, "What does the music bring to mind in the heart of the worshipper?" Don't confuse the question. It's not what does it inspire in my heart, but what does it inspire in the heart of the worshipper.
This will depend on the context. 

When I spoke to certain church folks, some of whom were Jamaican, they agreed that a variety of musical styles could be appropriate for their churches, but not reggae. For them, that style of music was about drugs. I then asked if it would be OK to use reggae music in my church where it does not have the same connotation. They agreed. The music was not the problem, the association was.

I have been in a church service where the pastor condemn reggae style of music simply because he didn’t like it and he view it to be musical style for irresponsible youth.; how wrong he was. Thankfully, more gospel artists are singing in the reggae style.

While you are free to listen to any music you like, you must be wary of what the songs are associated with. A person who likes hard-core rap music a lot might unconsciously be behaving like a gangster.

Another example: a romantic song might be suitable for a wedding reception but it will not be suitable for a church regular praise song. What a song is associated with is important. A good song could be render bad because of bad association.

Your music style matters... The type of songs you listen to matters.

Song: These Walls

You are good and do good;....  - Psalm 119:68  Few months back, I came across an inspiring song by Jason David who happens to be a pastor.  He was diagnosed with cancer. After a year-long fight with cancer that claimed much of his tongue, Pastor Jason David refuses to stop singing.
