Question: Should we be singing gospel songs sang by a secular artist?
Answer: If Tope Alabi goes secular, should we stop singing her gospel songs?
There is a controversy going on between secular music and gospel music. There have been some controversies recently between the secular and gospel. Some school of though believes that gospel music shouldn’t feature secular artist on their song while another school of thoughts believes any song is ok (no matter the artist) as long as it glorifies God.
While there is really no one answer fit all to all this controversies. We must careful about secularism. I do listen to certain secular songs though not as much as the gospel ones. One thing I have always notice is this: Secular songs are for the momentarily pleasure while gospel songs really do uplift our spirit being after listening to them.
I must state here that not all secular music are that bad or unfit for a children of God. Great artist like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston do have wonderful and powerful songs which are not gospel songs but it does pass a good message for our society. Gospel music is a genre of music just like reggae, RnB etc. in fact I have listen to some gospel songs that really wouldn’t have God’s backing.
Songs that contains anything contrary to the words of God is quite dangerous for you to be listening to. You become what you listened to over a period of time.
You can glorify God in any genre of music; rap, reggae, dancehall, hip hop, rnb, Afro and many more. What matter more than the genre of music is the motive behind the songs, does the lyrics upheld godly values or bad ones? A godly song might not necessarily be a churchy song, it might be a song that passes message to humanity. When you go for the sound and not the Godly perspective it is dangerous: “You can’t serve two masters; you have to love one and hate the other.”
Music transcend religion, cultures, gender, race. Music is unifying, music is life, music is cool.
